4 week Vegan Challenge

Why do I go on a 4 week vegan challenge?

I’ve always loved animals. However, I always ate them too… Sounds pretty contradicting, doesn’t it? I just never gave much thought about where the animal products I was using came from. After doing some major research on the subject and watching some pretty disturbing documentaries, I decided that I no longer can close my eyes. I don’t want to contribute to animal cruelty, I love animals! I don’t want to be part of a society that believes that animals are on this planet for humans to use. I don’t want to have, what the Banana girl (see below) likes to call, “the human supremacy syndrome”.

Another reason for me to go on this vegan challenge, is because of my health. I’ve always loved sugar. Too bad sugar loved me too… I can eat dozens of cookies, cakes and candies in a short amount of time. Afterwards, I feel tired and sick. I’m addicted to sugar. I did already started a few weeks ago to get rid of that addiction and so far I’m doing pretty well. I do however want to stop this sugar madness once and for all. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with eating a cookies every now and then, but as a treat, not as an entire meal or as a replacement for a meal.

For me, this challenge is not all about food. It’s about health, happiness and feeling energetic. Having the energy to do whatever I want to do, to get more clarity of mind, to set my priorities straight.

I do it for the people, for the animals and for the planet. Why? Because I care and because “but one person won’t make a difference” isn’t a reason not to do it, it’s and excuse for not caring enough.

The rules

The rules are simple:

  • No meat, poultry, fish, eggs, cheese, milk or other animal products
  • At least 3 decent meals a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner)
  • Drink at least 2 liters of water a day
  • Keep track of my nutrition through Cronometer

I’ve also made some more rules for myself. You might read these rules and think: “But what do these rules have to do with eating vegan?” Let me explain. When I’m experiencing more extreme emotions, like sadness or happiness, I tend to go shopping and spend money on stuff I don’t need. Also, when I feel a bit down or overwhelmed, I tend to hide from the world, turn into a couch potato, eat tons of sugary stuff, which usually only makes me feel worse. So that’s why I made the following rules:

  • No processed foods (I have a weakness for Oreo cookies. They are vegan, but they’re not healthy)
  • Don’t spend money on anything besides groceries and gas
  • Go outside at least 15 minutes a day
  • Exercise 5 days a week
  • Get up at 07:00 every day

Some things I hope to improve

  • Dry hair
  • Uneven complexion
  • Pimples
  • Nails that break easily
  • Low energy
  • Don’t want to move
  • A lot of reluctantly for almost anything
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Bad breath
  • Mood swings
  • I get colds very often
  • Binging
  • Flatulence
  • Depression
  • Trouble with sleeping
  • Food cravings
  • I feel heavy (mentally and physically)
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Quickly overwhelmed

Remember, going vegan is not something you should do for the wrong reasons (like vegan being a fashionable trend or because you think it’s cool). If you do it for the wrong reasons, the chances are that you won’t be able to stick with it. I recommend you think about your motivation and do some really thorough research before you make this lifestyle change.
